Sometimes this is just implicit in what outcomes are rewarded, punished, deemed realistic, how NPCs are characterized and respond to different approaches, etc. It's what Souvarine, in one of his most insightful and lucid moments, called "Moral Physics". I think far fewer quests actually have a specific didactic "message" they're trying to send. I don't think the medium lends itself well to that for anything but the most rigid quests with the most pre-set characters and outcomes. if you truly let players steer the main character, let alone the wider world, and ESPECIALLY if you include lots of dice or other elements of chance, then you cannot control what the exact ending is for any given conflict, romance, etcetera. People take away the messages they want to, but in quests especially, they help determine what the message IS. They shape and influence it as they go. The QM has MORE control, but rarely the sort of SOLE control you need to properly lecture on or demonstrate a philosophy.I also think the weakest moments in any quest, including my otherwise favourites, are when it feels like the QM is just directly stating "This is how you should feel. This is what you should believe."
